Valeriana jatamansi is a high value perennial herb that grows at an altitude of 1000–3000 MASL in the Indian Himalayan Region and used Ayurvedic, Unani Chinese systems medicine. The plant extracts essential oil (EO) obtained from its roots are pharmaceutical, aromatic flavouring industries. On account global annual demand lack organized cultivation this herb, it mostly collected wild causing depletion natural populations also leading to variable produce making unsuitable for industrial use. Therefore, promote cultivation, becomes imperative develop varieties with uniformity. Significant variations have been reported V. terms underground biomass accumulation, valepotriates indicating potential genotypic variability effective selection. review focuses on diversity inter- intra-population levels phenotypic traits, different active constituents scope improvement through selective breeding jatamansi. species has cross-pollinated behaviour floral dimorphism presents unique opportunities development homozygous progeny lines controlled self/sib-pollination by applying methods described population improvement. germplasm resources improved selections can be maintained clonally ensure their true-to-type identity.
